What is the "Art of Teaching" Program?

The “Art of Teaching” is a rigorous, 25-hour Teaching Artist Training Program for Hip Hop/Street dancers to develop and deepen their knowledge, skills, and practice for teaching in a K-12 school setting.

Throughout the course, artists will be able to:

  • Receive ongoing mentorship.
  • Work and grow collaboratively in a vibrant learning environment.
  • Translate their artistry and “Soul Message” into effective and engaging instruction.

Who should do the "Art of Teaching" Program?

We are looking for Hip Hop artists that have a PASSION and COMMITMENT to the craft of Hip Hop dance AND teaching.

Ideal candidates possess the following traits:

  • Positive and supportive learning approach
  • Responsible and reliable
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Artistic integrity and excellence
  • Flexible availability during school hours (8:00am - 2:00pm)
  • Experience teaching in a K-12 school setting (Not a requirement)

What will I Learn?

Our curriculum will cover the following content and skills:

  • Curriculum and Lesson Plan Design.
  • California Visual and Performing Arts Standards.
  • Common Core and Classroom Curriculum Integration.
  • Best Practices & Pedagogy for 21st Century Learning and Instruction.
  • Assessment Strategies.
  • Classroom Management.
  • Partnerships with Classroom Teachers.

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  • Develop an original, standards-based, sequential curriculum using your “Soul Message”.
  • Create effective, engaging, and meaningful lesson plans with clear outcomes, progression of activities, task and criteria, and assessment.
  • Design and demonstrate a new lesson in front of peers and receive constructive feedback.
  • Connect to a community of teaching artist professionals and arts education organizations.

We will meet on Wednesdays for 5 weeks.

Instructor Bio

Tiffany “Jimini” Bong is the founder and executive director of UniverSOUL Hip Hop and an international, award-winning Hip Hop/Street dancer and educator. Bong has a B.A. in Theatre & Dance and a B.S. in Psychology from Santa Clara University as well as a Professional Designation in Arts Education from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. She is a Hip Hop dance lecturer at the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, master teaching artist for The Music Center of Los Angeles County, and an arts education specialist, panelist, and consultant for arts agencies throughout the nation.
